Food! (Part 2)

Traditional food! And so the food obsession continues…

Traditional feast!

Whenever there are guests visiting ACCESS (think donors or university faculty) Winnie and crew put on a huge feast. Luckily, right as I was writing this post, one such feast was delivered to the guesthouse!

These images show typical Ugandan food. It is all very delicious but pretty heavy. See captions for more information!

Bananas!

Uganda produces a ton of bananas. In fact is it within the top 10 banana producing countries. These are mainly cooking bananas. Matoke is typically served with every meal, either fried and mixed in or mashed and steamed in banana leaves. They even make a local gin and several beers out of banana!

Rolex!

Not the watch! It’s a typical street food that consists of a chapati with a two-egged omelet (with some shallots) wrapped up like a burrito with tomato inside. These are wonderful. They have street vendors everywhere selling these. For some reason they love the name Ebeneezer here, so most things and vendors are named that. A Rolex typically costs 1,500 UGX, which is less than $0.50.

Pork from Dusk Point!

pure deliciousness!

One of the weekends we went out with Allan (the GC) we went to the bar Dusk Point. He previously raved about the guy’s pork, so we decided to try it. We walked in, he opened up a small refrigerator with some pieces of pork. Allan picked a piece and he cut it up with a machete on a huge tree stump. We then sat down and had some gin & tonics (which we introduced Allan too and he LOVED them) and chatted until the food came out. After about 40 minutes a huge tray of food was delivered. We used a tea kettle with hot water to wash our hands before digging in. The tray had minced onions, cabbage, matoke (type of banana) and the pork marinated in a wonderful red curry sauce. It was one of the most delicious meals I’ve ever had; very fatty and not healthy for you, but absolutely delicious.

That’s it for now.. but I’m sure there will be another food post.
